Rising the Child

January 22nd 2007 13:01
A boy stole a book from his school, and told his mother about it when he got home. Hearing that, the mother did not get angry. Instead, she praised how smart he was. The little boy got braver and braver. He stole a coat and presented it to his mother. Of course the mother was very delighted about it and praised him even more. Since then, the little boy grew up being better and better at stealing things. He had nothing to be afraid of since his mother was on his side.

When he grew up to an adult, he had became professional unbeatable thief. Once his luck turned him down, and he was caught by the police. As he had done too many crimes, it was decided by the court that he would be sentenced to death.
Before the execution, the thief requested to meet with his mother. So the old mother was summoned upon him. The thief wanted to whisper something to her, so he asked her to come closer. Just when the mother bent down his head, the thief bite her ears with all his might. The mother was in terrible pain and cried of having such an ungrateful son.
"Mother, have you ever thought? My life will end tragically, all because of you. You had been supporting all i had been doing that i eventually come this far. My life will end soon. I bite your ears to remind you that you had not rised your son well, that today you would have him lose his life."

Really gives you pause for thought. Was the mother wrong or should the son have been his own person and as an adult known better/

Hmm... Well, his mother shouldn't have encouraged him, sure; but, as a general rule, I don't like the idea that people have to be forced to be good or forced to be free. I'm a little bit suspicious of any situation where one person says to another: "You might not want this, but I'm doing it for your own good."

Governments say that too their citizens too often...
