Compassion is Seen Through the Eyes

That evening was a very cold evening in North Virginia, many many decades ago. The beard of the old man was covered with the winter ice while he was waiting for a ride crossing the river.
His wait was endless. His body went numb for the cold winter wind. He then could hear the subtle rhythm of horse steps that was running closer on the icy road. He watched some of the riders passed and turned the junction. He let them pass, without trying to catch their attention.
One pass, another pass and then another. Finally the last rider approached the old man who was sitting like a frozen snowman. When this one came closer, the old man caught glimpse of the rider ... and he said, "Sir, would you mind giving me a lift to get across? Seems there is no way to walk there." Stopping his horse, the rider replied, "Of course!".
The old man then said, "You are different from the other riders, just seeing the other riders i instantly could know there is no attention there for me. So it would be worthless for me to ask them for a lift. But when i looked at your eyes, kindness and compassion were obviously in yourself. I know at that time that your gentle heart would greet me a chance to be helped at this time when i really need it." The sincere comment warmed the heart of the rider deeply. "I thank you very much for what you had said, sir", he said to the old man. "I just hope that i would not be too busy handling my own problems that i fail to respond to others' needs."
While saying so, Thomas Jefferson, the kind horse rider, brought the old man with him, continuing his journey.
